Brother MFC-L6900DW Digital Color Multi-Function

The concept of combining everything into one device is very appealing—both space-wise and economically.

The printer works really well, delivering fast and clear output. It has a versatile driver to accommodate different paper types and includes a manual feed. I like the straight-through paper path, though the switch to allow heavyweight paper, cards, and envelopes is located at the back of the printer and requires a manual adjustment.

With the right settings, the color print quality is almost photographic. There are even color profiles—something I didn’t expect in a device of this class. It seems to use toner efficiently. I’m a low-volume user, but the starter cartridges still have plenty of toner remaining. The cost of ownership seems reasonable—a big plus over the competition—with OEM cartridges being less expensive. I would never use third-party or refilled cartridges.

Scanner:

The default scans are great. However, a major disappointment is the limited number of advanced controls for correcting the scan. Only minimal brightness and contrast adjustments are available. I would have preferred a “Pro” option that enables more fine-tuned adjustments, similar to a stand-alone scanner. The scanner can be controlled from the touchpad, the Brother scanner driver, or the macOS scanner driver.

Copier:

The copier works well, and the scanner can deliver good results using default settings. It includes features like basic image correction, reduction and enlargement, collating, and 2-on-1 copying. However, the document feeder has a slight misalignment that shifts the copied image about 1/8″ higher toward the top edge than the original. For some jobs, this is a problem.

Fax:

I’ve only sent two faxes since I installed the machine in 2013. I don’t have a dedicated phone line, so I just plug in the line as needed. I haven’t received any faxes yet. The setup seemed complicated, and I was too lazy to try configuring my answering machine or running a second line. Also, I’m thinking of dropping my landline, which would render the fax function useless.

Feature request: A way to scan directly to an internet fax line.
